Computers Are Just Tools; Computer Science Is About People

In some sense computer science is like geometry. When the art of measuring crop fields was under development by the ancient Mediterranean’s it was most naturally coined geometry – literally meaning measurement of the Earth. Geometry was slowly developed by many scholars to solve a wide range of practical applications. This includes, but is certainly not limited to, forecasting expected crop yields, division of land into parcels, and even to build some of the Seven Wonders of the World as present in classical antiquity. Later on, Arabic and European scholars expanded the notion of geometry to include the spatial relationship of any abstract figure and its properties. However, this also meant that the name, geometry, no longer fitted its original meaning, since abstract figures don’t have to involve dirt, such as non-Euclidian objects (like the Norwegian coast line).... MapR Claims Title as De Facto Standard for Hadoop

The champagne has been flowing over at MapR since Google announced the integration of its Distribution for Hadoop with Google Compute Engine, the start-up's second big win in a row. The combination of the new Google Compute Engine and MapR enables users to quickly provision large MapR clusters for Big Data analytics on-demand in the cloud. Since Hadoop was inspired by Google's own MapReduce and file system it's a puzzle Google went out-of-house for the widgetry rather than commercialize its own. MapR doesn't have an answer to that quest... (more)
