I attended the MongoDB World in NY city earlier this week on June 24th. and 25th. There were 2000 attendees for this first-time event. I met many people who flew in from all over the world. It was quite a phenomenon for a six-year old company. The momentum of MongoDB  is truly amazing. For those who do not know MongoDB, it’s a new generation open source NoSQL database for building highly interactive modern applications. Enterprises have built “systems of record” over last 3 decades using traditional RDBMS such as DB2, Oracle, MySQL and SQL Server. These systems are like the interstate highways built during the 1930s across the USA. They serve the business in handling basic functions, but are inadequate in meeting several new needs. Hence the need for building “systems of engagement” has arrived. These systems connect customers, employees, and partners into the busi... (more)

3 Reasons to Use Cloud Servers

Maybe you’re new to the web hosting game. Maybe you are an old pro who is an active mod on Web Hosting Talk making sure us Cloud providers don’t run amuck on your forums. Or maybe you are a developer who needs a virtualized environment to test out and run new code. Whatever your situation, Cloud server hosting is for you. Be it Windows or Linux Cloud Hosting, one thing is for sure, everyone can use a powerful and affordable Cloud server solution. Here’s why. 1. Cloud Servers Grow with Your Need Everyone wants more than just a one size fits all solution. As a consumer or business spending money on a product, you want to know your investment will be sound as you grow or shrink in need. Cloud servers offer this ability. Due to a variety of factors, investing in Cloud hosting solutions – be they Linux or Windows – means consumers and corporations can grow or shrink the... (more)

An Infrastructure for Server Clusters for High Availability

As announced in our Cluster Services Built With FOSS post, LinuxForce’s Cluster Services are built exclusively with Free and Open Source Software (FOSS). Here is an expanded outline of the basic architecture of our approach to High-Availability (HA) clustering. Overview In any HA deployment there are two main components: hosts and guests. The hosts are the systems which are the core of the cluster itself. The host runs with very limited services dedicated for the use and functioning of the cluster. The host systems handle resource allocation, from persistent storage to RAM to the number of CPUs each guest gets. The host machines give an “outside” look at guest performance and give the opportunity to manipulate them from outside the guest operating system. This offers significant advantages when there are boot or other failures which traditionally would require phys... (more)

Lenovo Introduces an ‘Interpersonal Computer’

Remember Microsoft's Surface? Well, Lenovo's got this thing called the IdeaCentre Horizon Table PC that it's touting as the first "interpersonal computer." It's a Window 8 dingus with a 27-inch screen that can be laid down or stood up so four people can use it all at once as though it was a big board game, which went fitted out with paddles and joysticks appears to be its main purpose. Surface, now called PixelSense, was designed for store displays and other commercial applications. The Table PC's screen, which is the size of eight iPads sewn together, is said to respond to 10 fingers touching it at the same time. Photos and videos can be rotated. It weighs 15lbs and will cost $1,699 this summer when it goes on sale. ... (more)

Commodity Network Fabrics

What role does the concept of a “network fabric” play in the march towards commoditization of networking?  Well, let’s discuss! The Whole Shebang There can be no doubt that an organization’s relationship to networking is to the aggregate thing they call “the network.”  When there are issues, non-network folks say wonderfully vague things like “The network is dropping packets!” or “I can’t login… must be the network.”  This intuition, to think about the network as a whole, rather than as a collection of systems, is right:  Collectively, the network is supposed to produce desirable aggregate behavior. This is an important clue as to how networking will evolve in the future.  SDN is a step in this direction.  Intelligent software will undoubtedly coordinate the actions of the underlying constituent systems, on behalf of an operator or an application, to achieve some po... Apache Drill’s Self-Service Capabilities By @MapR | @CloudExpo [#BigData]

Help Yourself: Leveraging Apache Drill's Self-Service Capabilities Small data management solutions don't work in our brave new Big Data world. Back in the small data days, we talked proudly about having gigabytes of structured data that had been carefully denormalized to reduce latency as much as possible. Today's data is measured in petabytes, and it is dynamic, complex, and wildly varied in structure. Small data was a nicely planned garden, but Big Data is a jungle: rich with resources, abundant in growth, but also a bit overwhelming and easy to get lost in. Exploring that jungle requires solutions that enable interactive, self-service ways to work with historical as well as near real-time data. Hadoop and NoSQL on Hadoop solved a significant amount of Big Data access and availability problems. Add Apache Drill and SQL-on-Hadoop to the mix and you have a solution... (more)

Amazon Scales MySQL for Heavy Traffic

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has added Read Replicas to its Relational Database Service (RDS) to make it easier to scale MySQL deployments to meet the performance demands of high-traffic web applications. Read Replicas lets users create one or more copies of a MySQL Database Instance and an application serve read traffic from the multiple replicas. They can create or delete replicas in minutes using the point-and-click interface of the AWS Management Console. Amazon says Read Replicas can be made to another Availability Zone as a disaster-ready failover measure under its Multi-AZ deployments program. Once a Read Replica is created, any subsequent updates to the source will automatically be replicated in the Read Replica. And Read Replicas can be elastically added to any RDS database deployment to keep query response times fast, even as request volumes scale. Amazon fi... (more)

Top Two Technology Priorities for CIOs in 2011: Cloud & Virtualization

"New infrastructure and operations technologies such as cloud services and virtualization ... were selected by CIOs the most often and are the top-two technologies for 2011," said Mark McDonald, group vice president and head of research for Gartner Executive Programs, as the results were announced of the 2011 CIO Agenda survey by Gartner Executive Programs (EXP). "CIOs and IT have been boxed in between modest budget growth and growing legacy requirements," McDonald continued, noting that "Cloud services and virtualization are well-suited for this budget reality, as they offer similar service levels at lower budget costs." The worldwide CIO survey was conducted by Gartner EXP from September to December 2010 and represents CIO budget plans reported at that time. According to the results, CIOs expect to adopt new cloud services much faster than originally expected. Cur... (more)
