Account Sharing in SPM, Logsene and Site Search Analytics By @Sematext | @DevOpsSummit [#DevOps]

Using Cloud (aka SaaS) applications is natural for most of us — simply sign up with your email, login and then use the service within minutes.  The Cloud works particularly well with consumer-oriented services. Businesses, however, have slightly different needs. Up until now, Sematext Apps offered only App sharing.  For instance, if you had an SPM App for monitoring your Elasticsearch cluster, another SPM App for monitoring Spark, and a Logsene App where you shipped all your logs, you could invite one or more of your teammates to each one of those apps separately, and give them either Admin or User role.  This works fine when you have just a few teammates or just a few Apps. Larger organizations (aka Enterprises), however, have more complex needs due to their size and structure: they often have multiple departments and teams, many of whom have different roles and pe... Will Cloud Computing Confuse Network Management?

Network Management at Cloud Expo In today’s technology-dependent enterprise environment, the efficiency of most business processes depends directly on the effective performance of the IT infrastructure. Almost every single activity - from servicing a customer to shipping purchased products - is dependent upon one or more software applications and the underlying computing/network infrastructure. This demand is already stretching traditional network management tools to the limit, given the universal adoption of multi-tier applications, distributed computing and web technologies in the last decade. The advent of cloud computing, the latest evolution in IT, creates a new set of challenges that require innovative tools to help businesses leverage the cost and efficiency benefits of cloud computing, while mitigating the risks. Simply described, cloud computing uses virtual... (more)

Which Open Source Software License Should I Use?

I've recently been involved in several discussions that are variations on, "Which open source or free software license should I choose for my project?" Here is my way of looking at the large and growing collection of licenses in the wild. First let's make sure we all understand that I Am Not A Lawyer. This is not legal advice. Depending upon your needs and your comfort with risk around your software, you'll want to confirm your legal choices with counsel in your jurisdiction. The first and obvious consideration is whether or not the license is approved as an open source license by the Open Source Initiative (OSI). The OSI created the Open Source Definition in the late 1990s as a set of attributes that a software license must support to be considered "open source". Anyone can take a license to the OSI for debate and discussion and if approved as meeting the OSD, the... (more)

Cloud Computing: The Next Generation of Computing & Sustainable IT

I have been asked to moderate a cloud computing discussion at Green Gov 2012. The title of the session is “Cloud Computing: The Next Generation of Computing and Sustainable IT”. It is a great honor to be selected to participate as moderator. I believe this is my second go around. As National Director of Cloud Services with Core BTS, Inc. it is my job to articulate the value of cloud computing. I have been pondering the title a bit and for me to actually discuss the next generation of Cloud, we have to identify the current situation. The cloud has gone way beyond Google Mail and SalesForce (CRM), into other areas like Cloud Security, Cloud Storage, and Cloud Back Up. Furthermore, we actually must define our idea of cloud computing and sustainable IT. Not everyone is on the same page. What Is Cloud Computing? NIST defines cloud computing as a model for enabling ubiquit... (more)

Programmability in the Network | @DevOpsSummit [#DevOps]

Programmability in the Network, of the Network and by the Network Programmability is an integral component of just about every emergent technology and trend today. Cloud? It's based on the ability of providers (public or private) to abstract, automate and orchestrate the network using programmability. DevOps? A significant tenet of DevOps relies on automation, which in turn requires programmability of the infrastructure (network and application) upon which apps are deployed.  SDN? Again, a core principle of SDN is the ability to programmatically modify the behavior of the network to better serve applications as well as operationalization to improve time to market, lower operating expenses and reduce risk. In fact, saying programmability is an integral component may be understating the issue. Programmability is a key foundational principle upon which most of these te... (more)

Gordon Haff Joins @DevOpsSummit New York Faculty [@GHaff #DevOps]

Containers: Don't Skeu Them Up. Use Microservices Instead Skeuomorphism usually means retaining existing design cues in something new that doesn't actually need them. However, the concept of skeuomorphism can be thought of as relating more broadly to applying existing patterns to new technologies that, in fact, cry out for new approaches. In his session at DevOps Summit, Gordon Haff, Senior Cloud Strategy Marketing and Evangelism Manager at Red Hat, will discuss why containers should be paired with new architectural practices such as microservices rather than mimicking legacy server virtualization workflows and architectures. It's far more fruitful and useful to approach containers as something fundamentally new and enabling that's part and parcel of an environment including containerized operating systems, container packaging systems, container orchestration like K...
