Meld Embedded Linux Community Hits Its Six Month Anniversary

MontaVista® Software, Inc., the leader in embedded Linux® commercialization, today announced that Meld is now an active community of over 1,500 participants as it passes six months in operation. Meld fills a need for embedded Linux developers, offering a community where members can connect to ask questions, share information and obtain answers, and support one another in their design efforts. This continued collaboration lets developers accelerate their development efforts and speed the delivery of Linux-based commercial products to market.

As Meld continues to grow, it leverages the collective embedded Linux knowledge base to provide 24-hour community-driven self-help for development issues specific to embedded Linux, without restrictions on the flavor of Linux or hardware. This fills a void that exists within the open source community, which historically has lacked a comprehensive, central repository of technical expertise specific to embedded Linux. Discussions in Meld focus on technical topics such as passing interrupts to a userspace application, applying kernel patches, and establishing communications via the serial port to quote a few examples.

Supporting Quotes:

“Linux is based on the idea of sharing knowledge and information, and there are strong underpinnings of this throughout the entire Linux community. Having Meld as a place for embedded Linux developers to go to collaborate and experience that sense of community is critical,” said Dan Cauchy, Vice President of Marketing at MontaVista Software. “We have seen Meld develop into a resource where embedded Linux device developers can come together to share their knowledge, collaborate with one another, and speed the design of innovative commercial solutions running on embedded Linux. We believe that as Meld continues to grow and mature, this forum will allow embedded Linux to grow and prosper.”

“Melders 'speak my language' more than other Linux forums I've visited. So when I have a problem, there's sure to be somebody to offer a useful answer,” said Doug Abbot of Intellimetrix. “Likewise, I'm in a better position to help others with their questions.”

“Meld has been a long time coming. I wish it had been done sooner,” said Naveen Gogineni, a Meld participant. “There is an amazing amount of help and expertise that is sometimes not reflected in documentation or that individual support personnel are not capable of addressing effectively. That is where Meld comes in.”

When talking IoT we often focus on the devices, the sensors, the hardware itself. The new smart appliances, the new smart or self-driving cars (which are amalgamations of many ‘things'). When we are looking at the world of IoT, we should take a step back, look at the big picture. What value are these devices providing. IoT is not about the devices, its about the data consumed and generated. The devices are tools, mechanisms, conduits. This paper discusses the considerations when dealing with the...
