ParaScale and Moonwalk Partner to Deliver a Cloud-based Hierarchical Storage Management Solution

ParaScale, Inc., a leader in developing cloud storage solutions, and Moonwalk Inc., the technology leader in Information Lifecycle Management software, today announced at Gartner ITxpo the availability of an integrated storage management solution that enables organizations to offload infrequently accessed data from expensive primary storage to an economical ParaScale cloud. The combined ParaScale/Moonwalk solution provides a data management framework that reduces costs by decreasing the dependency on expensive primary storage and shrinks backup windows.

The volume of digital data created and stored by organizations continues to grow exponentially. A large percentage of this data is required to be accessible at all times even though the data may not be accessed frequently. Administrators typically will continue to purchase primary storage to accommodate the growth of this data. This primary storage continues to grow even though the majority of the data may not be accessed for some time and the enterprise ends up paying for capacity to store infrequently accessed files. To assist storage administrators with identifying these files, ParaScale and Moonwalk have partnered to offer an integrated hierarchical storage management solution that empowers administrators to proactively define data migration policies and enable these policies throughout the enterprise. Using such policies, administrators can migrate their infrequently accessed primary data to a private ParaScale storage cloud. The end result is a significant reduction in TCO of purchasing and managing storage.

The ParaScale/Moonwalk solution runs on commodity Linux hardware. Enterprises can start small, try out the solution in a free, low-risk environment, and scale seamlessly to petabyte scale with no downtime. Administrators can migrate data to the ParaScale storage cloud based on policy which they can determine through the use of the Moonwalk software. Users can define data migration rules based on attributes of their data, and run simulations to determine the savings in storage capacity of primary storage before doing the actual migration. By migrating primary data off Tier 1 storage, the amount of storage that needs to be backed up is greatly reduced, thus dramatically shrinking backup windows and reducing cost.

“The amount of unstructured data being generated in home directories, document management systems and other locations is exploding and most users expect this data to be available online without retrieval delays,” said Sajai Krishnan, CEO, ParaScale. “Using ParaScale, enterprises can build a secure private cloud within their data center and transparently migrate data off their primary storage to the cloud using Moonwalk. This value-add solution offers customers an easy-to-use, scalable process for reducing the total cost of storage and is representative of the partnerships ParaScale is forging to deliver practical, affordable private cloud storage to enterprises.”

“Moonwalk software integrates seamlessly with the ParaScale cloud such that Moonwalk can be used to classify and move data based on user-defined attributes completely transparent to the end user,” said Michael Harvey, CTO of Moonwalk. “Once data has been identified, automatic schedules can be setup to transfer files from primary storage to a virtual file system on the ParaScale cloud, providing administrators with a clean and elegant mechanism to decrease their dependency on more expensive primary storage.”

Availability

The integrated ParaScale/Moonwalk cloud-based storage management solution is available immediately and can be downloaded from the ParaScale website. A free version allows enterprises to migrate up to 4 TBs of data from their primary storage to the ParaScale cloud. For more information please visit www.parascale.com.

When talking IoT we often focus on the devices, the sensors, the hardware itself. The new smart appliances, the new smart or self-driving cars (which are amalgamations of many ‘things'). When we are looking at the world of IoT, we should take a step back, look at the big picture. What value are these devices providing. IoT is not about the devices, its about the data consumed and generated. The devices are tools, mechanisms, conduits. This paper discusses the considerations when dealing with the...
