A funny thing happened to Winged Media, a three-year-old Australian firm, on the way to building out its global service offering over the public cloud — in this case Amazon’s S3 data storage service. The company, which provides platform-based marketing solutions for Internet-domain investors, wanted to launch a cloud-based Internet-domain auction service, but in a trial, Winged Media encountered very slow global access to the data.
Some quick analysis revealed that the customers suffering the slow response times were incurring data latency — that is, sluggish response resulting from their great distance from the content. The problem was critical for Winged Media to solve because it affected the company’s Protrada Domain Exchange, an auction site on which expiring, or back-order, domains from different sources go up for bid. Winged Media needed to be certain it could update and synchronize its servers around the world for its global customer base or its flagship service wouldn’t fly.
