Guavus’ Bankroll Now Stands at $87 Million

The latest money comes from new investors Goldman Sachs and Asia-focused TransLink Capital

Big Data start-ups are like ants at a church picnic. They're everywhere and they're getting fed.

Guavus, which is focused on tier-one communications service providers and has kept a low profile for the past seven years, has just raised another $9 million, which makes a whopping $87 million in funding altogether.

It just closed a $30 million D round in January.

The latest money comes from new investors Goldman Sachs and Asia-focused TransLink Capital.

Guavus says it will use the funds to continue to expand its core products, scale its operations, and pursue acquisitions to support demand for its holistic Big Data analytics solutions.

It recently bought Canada-based mobile analytics start-up Neuralitic Systems.

Toshi Otani, managing director of TransLink Capital, said in a statement, "With 40% of the world's mobile data traffic due to be carried over Asia-based networks by 2016 we expect APAC to be a strong market for Guavus," a clear hint of the direction it'll go.

The company has developed a suite of subscription-based decisioning applications that have pre-built intelligence for faster time-to-insights. These insights, which span across network, device, content and subscriber analytics, are supposed to let carriers realize cost savings by optimizing network capacity and increase revenues by delivering a better consumer experience.

According to GigaOm, "The magic happens in marrying and infusing that network data with the demographic and billing data."

Evidently as more data sources connect to the platform, the applications iteratively update themselves to become richer and dynamically stream more valuable insights. The insights are displayed graphically through easy-to-use dashboards that are supposed to democratize decision-making across the enterprise and into the extended enterprise.

CEO Anukool Lakhina says, "Guavus has created a new data fabric that fuses disparate sources of data streaming on the network with existing information systems to provide contextually aware decisioning applications that can be used to trigger business processes at the exact moment of need. Our focus on rapid analysis first yields a high return on investment for customers."

The widgetry is supposed to unlock the value of operational, sensor and network-generated Big Data.

Guavus claims two of the top three mobile operators and backbone carriers in the US and two of the top three mobile carriers in Canada use its analytics.

It reportedly has 400 employees and is still hiring.

Existing backers include Intel.

The Internet of Things will challenge the status quo of how IT and development organizations operate. Or will it? Certainly the fog layer of IoT requires special insights about data ontology, security and transactional integrity. But the developmental challenges are the same: People, Process and Platform and how we integrate our thinking to solve complicated problems. In his session at 19th Cloud Expo, Craig Sproule, CEO of Metavine, demonstrated how to move beyond today's coding paradigm and sh...

What are the new priorities for the connected business? First: businesses need to think differently about the types of connections they will need to make – these span well beyond the traditional app to app into more modern forms of integration including SaaS integrations, mobile integrations, APIs, device integration and Big Data integration. It’s important these are unified together vs. doing them all piecemeal. Second, these types of connections need to be simple to design, adapt and configure...
Cell networks have the advantage of long-range communications, reaching an estimated 90% of the world. But cell networks such as 2G, 3G and LTE consume lots of power and were designed for connecting people. They are not optimized for low- or battery-powered devices or for IoT applications with infrequently transmitted data. Cell IoT modules that support narrow-band IoT and 4G cell networks will enable cell connectivity, device management, and app enablement for low-power wide-area network IoT. B...
Contextual Analytics of various threat data provides a deeper understanding of a given threat and enables identification of unknown threat vectors. In his session at @ThingsExpo, David Dufour, Head of Security Architecture, IoT, Webroot, Inc., discussed how through the use of Big Data analytics and deep data correlation across different threat types, it is possible to gain a better understanding of where, how and to what level of danger a malicious actor poses to an organization, and to determin...
