The AllSeen Alliance's AllJoyn Is Named Top Internet of Things Open Source Project

Postcape's IoT Awards 'Highlight and Celebrate the Year's Best Projects, Companies and Ideas Helping Create an Internet of Things'

SAN FRANCISCO, CA -- (Marketwired) -- 02/03/14 -- The AllSeen Alliance, the broadest cross-industry consortium to advance the Internet of Everything, today announced that the AllJoyn project is a People's Choice Award winner in the 2013 Internet of Things Awards. The awards are handed out by the Internet of Things tracking company Postscapes.

Voters chose AllJoyn as the Best IoT open source project, an award that recognizes projects that enhance the Internet of Things "by incorporating open source technology or by making public the details of their own designs and software," according to Postscapes.

AllJoyn is a key part of the AllSeen Alliance, which was formed in December by The Linux Foundation and industry leaders to drive an open, universal framework to connect devices and systems. Members are collaborating on an open software framework, based on AllJoyn, that allows devices and systems to seamlessly discover, dynamically connect and interact with nearby products regardless of brand, transport layer, platform or operating system.

AllJoyn was originally developed by and has been contributed to the Alliance by Qualcomm Innovation Center, Inc., a subsidiary of Qualcomm Incorporated, and is being expanded with contributions from member companies and the open source community.

Products, applications and services created with the AllJoyn open source project can communicate over various transport layers, such as Wi-Fi, power line or Ethernet, regardless of manufacturer or operating system and without the need for Internet access.

Founding members of the AllSeen Alliance include some of the world's leading, consumer electronics manufacturers, home appliances manufacturers, service providers, retailers, enterprise technology companies, innovative startups, and chipset manufacturers. They include premier level members Haier, LG Electronics, Panasonic, Qualcomm, Sharp, Silicon Image, and TP-LINK. Community members include Canary, Cisco, D-Link, doubleTwist, Fon, Harman, HTC, Letv, LIFX, Lite-on, Moxtreme, Musaic, Sears Brand Management Corporation, Sproutling, The Sprosty Network, Weaved and Wilocity.

Liat Ben-Zur, chairman of the AllSeen Alliance, said, "We're delighted and proud to receive an award that recognizes the championing of openness, transparency and collaborative development. Those qualities are important as companies work together to ensure the essential ingredient of interoperability in the Internet of Everything."

IoT & Smart Cities Stories
The standardization of container runtimes and images has sparked the creation of an almost overwhelming number of new open source projects that build on and otherwise work with these specifications. Of course, there's Kubernetes, which orchestrates and manages collections of containers. It was one of the first and best-known examples of projects that make containers truly useful for production use. However, more recently, the container ecosystem has truly exploded. A service mesh like Istio addr...

When talking IoT we often focus on the devices, the sensors, the hardware itself. The new smart appliances, the new smart or self-driving cars (which are amalgamations of many ‘things'). When we are looking at the world of IoT, we should take a step back, look at the big picture. What value are these devices providing.
