MegaTrend Update: Convergence and trends to common platforms

By Bob Gourley

Everyone everywhere is consistently seeking more common platforms to build capabilities on. This includes common stacks and protocols for all technologies, and software defined everything.

There is also a continual march toward common operating concepts (ISO, CMMI, ITIL). Increasingly the environments for developers (IDE) are also common. And code repositories connected to these environments are as well. If trends continue, one day GitHub will hold all code.

Although there are several Hadoop distributions available, the Cloudera Distribution, CDH, continues to innovate and grow and is now foundational as a common big data platform.

A new trend towards open analytical platforms, like Pentaho, is also underway. The open source identity management platform ForgeRock is quickly becoming the go-to supporter of enterprise access solutions. This trend towards open has room for proprietary code and protected innovation, but is is a blended world where open source is the foundation.
