Databricks Certifies Alpine Data Labs on Spark, Enables Hadoop at the Speed of Business

Alpine Data Labs Becomes One of the First Companies to Be Certified on Spark, Showcasing Query Performance Up to 100x Faster Than Hadoop MapReduce

NEW YORK, NY -- (Marketwired) -- 03/18/14 -- Alpine Data Labs, the leader in Advanced Analytics Software on Big Data and Hadoop, announced today that it is one of the first Enterprise Advanced Analytics Platforms to be certified by Databricks on Apache Spark. Databricks, the company founded by the creators of Spark, recently announced the new Spark Certification as a means to encourage new development on the distributed, in-memory cluster computing framework.

"We are thrilled to see innovators like Alpine Data Labs further the popularity of Spark and extend its value to business users and enterprise customers," says Ion Stoica, co-founder and CEO at Databricks.

With customers using its product around the globe and a recent position in Gartner's Magic Quadrant for Advanced Analytics Platforms, Alpine Data Labs is positioning itself as a strong innovator in the enterprise space. Attendees at the Structure Data conference can view live demonstrations of Alpine Chorus at booth #16 and attend Alpine's session on Wed 3/19 at 1:15pm, featuring leaders from Barclays, Morgan Stanley and Ford.

"Spark has brought new levels of speed and agility to the world of Big Data and we couldn't be more excited to be one of the earlier adopters of this technology," says Steven Hillion, Alpine Data Labs' Chief Product Officer.

The Elephant in the Room
"Companies have been struggling to deliver on the full promise of Hadoop. Hadoop is falling behind the pace of business because it is too complicated and slow. In order to allow business users to gain deep insights out of Big Data, we need analytics software that is faster, user-friendly and more agile. At Alpine Data Labs, we are committed to this vision and it is embedded in everything we do"

Alpine Chorus, the company's flagship product, is the industry's leading analytics platform for Big Data. The company's modern architecture makes it easy for business users and I.T. departments to adopt. It is designed for massive scalability and its end-to-end capabilities make it a perfect fit for enterprises eager to make analytics part of their culture. Gartner recently positioned the company in its Magic Quadrant for Advanced Analytics Platforms and customers in all industries rave about its performance: "There is simply nothing like Alpine," says Katrin Ribant, CSO at Datorama, a cross-channel marketing analytics company that received investment from Google Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt's venture capital fund.

Harness the Power of Your Data
Why do companies still take months to get actionable insights? For Steven Hillion, the answer is simple: "First, there is a data issue. Database administrators have access to the data and they often need to provision it to the business teams so they can analyze it. There is a lot of inefficient back-and-forth. We provide a self-service environment that business employees use to search and explore datasets: picture the equivalent of a Google for databases and Hadoop clusters."

He continues: "Second, there is a data movement issue. Today's data is too big and heterogeneous for the methods of advanced analytics. Teams have to move data into dedicated analytical environments. This takes time, costs money and results in narrow analysis because it can only be performed on data samples. At Alpine, we have figured out how to execute machine learning and data mining directly in source systems, whether they are Hadoop or MPP databases. Our analytics scale to massive datasets, in pretty much any format, directly where they sit."

"Finally, Predictive Analytics on Hadoop is still too difficult," says Hillion. "It requires specialists and coding. We've built an abstraction layer above Hadoop that allows business users to create complex analytics workflows from an intuitive drag and drop interface without ever writing a line of code. We've applied that same approach to Spark, combining Alpine's recognized ease of use with lightning fast performance."

Leverage the Innovation of Your People
Beyond data-related issues, Big Data fails to impact people's decisions rapidly. According to a recent Bain & Co research report, only 4% of companies attribute better decision making and performance to the use of Big Data analytics.

"This shows a clear disconnect between the multiple actors of the analytics pipeline," says Hillion. "Current solutions make it really hard for data scientists, business users and engineers to work together effectively. This creates fragmented and inefficient processes. That's why we've developed an analytics platform on top of a web-based collaborative environment where everything, from data discovery to data transformation to analytics, can be centralized, in a transparent and secure way. We've found that this is the best way to encourage the sharing of data, analytics, insights and best practices".

Alpine Data Labs is bound to shake up the market with its new approach. Its integration with Spark makes the company an even stronger innovator. Try it for yourself @ start.alpinenow.com
