HP Makes Donation To Apache

Gives Three Emerging Web Services Standards

HP showed its committed desire to advancing Web services standards with the recent donation of three emerging standards to the Apache Software Foundation. The standards that have been implemented are Management using Web Services (MUWS), Web Services Resource Framework (WSRF), and Web Services Notification (WSN). The projects are all in incubator stages at Apache.

WSRF, called Apollo, defines a generic and open framework for modeling and accessing stateful resources using Web services. This includes mechanisms to describe views on the state, to support management of the state through properties associated with the Web service, and to describe how these mechanisms are extensible to groups of Web services.

WSN, referred to as Hermes, will eventually host an implementation of OASIS WS-Notification (WSN) 1.2. The implementation will be build by pulling in code from the Globus WSRF/WSN implementation and refactoring it to make use of the new Apollo WSRF impl and to use XMLBeans instead of Axis types for improved SOAP engine portability.

The MUWS implementation, project Muse, is a robust Java implementation of the Management using Web Services (MuWS) 0.5 specification and the underlying WS-* specifications it is based upon. The next major release of Muse, targeted for March 2005, will be an implementation of the soon-to-be-released MuWS 1.0 specification.

It is believed that broad industry adoption of the standards will drive down the cost and complexity of building manageable business services, reduce the development time needed to integrate new applications and better enable customers to dynamically manage their heterogeneous IT environments.
